The successful candidate will manage a specialist caseload, support patients to maximise functional independence following spinal cord injury and other spinal conditions, and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve meaningful rehabilitation outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and prioritise a specialist spinal rehabilitation caseload, undertaking comprehensive occupational therapy assessments and developing individualised treatment plans.
  • Assess functional abilities, occupational performance and rehabilitation needs, supporting patients to maximise independence in activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Deliver specialist interventions addressing personal care, dressing, toileting, functional transfers, wheelchair use and participation in meaningful occupations.
  • Assess equipment needs, seating, positioning, pressure management and environmental adaptations to promote safety, accessibility and independence.
  • Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team (MDT), patients, families and carers to establish rehabilitation goals and monitor progress.
  • Contribute to complex discharge planning, coordinating equipment provision, home adaptations, community rehabilitation and ongoing support.
  • Apply advanced clinical reasoning to manage complex presentations, identify clinical risks and adapt interventions in response to changing rehabilitation needs.
  • Provide clinical guidance and supervision to junior staff, support workers and students, as appropriate.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, service development and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and professional reports in accordance with HCPC standards, professional guidance and organisational policies.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Occupational Therapy with current HCPC registration.
  • Relevant post-registration experience in physical rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, spinal rehabilitation or a comparable specialist clinical setting.
  • Strong occupational therapy assessment, clinical reasoning and treatment planning skills.
  • Understanding of spinal cord injury and its impact on functional independence, occupational performance and participation.
  • Experience supporting individuals with complex physical rehabilitation needs and developing person-centred intervention plans.
  • Knowledge of equipment provision, functional transfers, wheelchair and seating considerations, pressure management and discharge planning.
  • Ability to manage a clinical caseload independently, prioritise competing demands and assess and manage clinical risk.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and multidisciplinary teamworking skills.
  • Experience supporting colleagues, students or service development activities, with the ability to demonstrate leadership appropriate to a Band 6 role.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development, evidence-based practice and delivering high-quality patient care.

Additional Information

The ideal candidate will be proactive, compassionate and clinically confident, with a strong commitment to promoting independence, dignity and quality of life for individuals undergoing spinal rehabilitation.
