LOCATION: Belfast

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: 51,700 - £61,467 per annum pro rata depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

BBC News NI is seeking to recruit a part time (0.5 ET) Assistant Editor for 12 months. In the first instance the successful candidate will work on radio current affairs output. This is a key leadership role in the Belfast newsroom. The successful candidate will lead teams producing the Talkback programme and will play a key part in shaping our news output for the future.

Your Key Responsibilities And Impact

The Assistant Editor plays a key role in delivering high-quality editorial content, fostering creativity and innovation within the team, and maintaining strong performance standards. They provide constructive feedback, understand newsroom technologies—especially for radio—and contribute to the broader management team. The role requires flexibility across outputs and active involvement in enhancing BBC News NI’s social media presence and cross-platform promotion.

Essential Criteria

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Substantial radio journalism production experience.
  • A proven track record of sound news judgement. Ability to deal with complex editorial issues in a pressurised environment.
  • A proven ability to produce original journalism and treatments.
  • A thorough understanding the politics and current affairs of Northern Ireland along with a keen interest in current affairs across these islands.
  • Evidence of the ability to manage and lead teams of staff, providing regular feedback and playing a key role in developing talent.
